While fully mature soybeans are hard and used to make products like soy sauce, tofu, and soy milk, edamame are picked early while the beans are still vibrant green. The name roughly translates to "bean branch" or "beans on a branch" in Japanese, honoring the historical practice of selling them still attached to their stems in markets.

Edamame is highly valued not only for its subtly sweet, nutty flavor but also for its exceptional nutritional profile. It is one of the few plant-based sources considered a "complete protein," meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids required by the human body. They are also rich in dietary fiber, vitamin K, folate, and iron.

Served fresh or frozen, in or out of the pod, edamame can be enjoyed as a standalone snack, tossed into salads, blended into dips, or stirred into rice and noodle dishes. The pods themselves are fibrous and inedible, acting simply as a flavor-infusing vessel during the cooking process.
